Modern Industrial Culture
We have become so adept at making things that the Industrial Culture sees it as a great achievement
to make something that is so easy to manufacture because so many things are made so easily
therefore we do not perceive that it is important to produce something very different. We
are too quick to take the easy product and make it into something that is better,
brighter, faster, cheaper, with so much more potential. We do not know we are making
something that better. The Industrial Culture creates an artificial need to make
something that is not better.
It cannot be denied that the Industrial Culture has caused many problems. It has
contributed to the depletion of our natural resources and to the decline in the
standard of living of many people. Yet we continue to make the same things, we are
told so many time that it is no big deal, it is just made out of the ordinary.
I do not think I have ever seen a great success in the last 10 or 20 years
except in one way. I saw a man go up on his pedestal, I suppose he was a big
success and a great American citizen. I saw a lot of people make a lot of
money because of him. I think that his example is so critical in so many things
that it is critical in so many things right now. And I think that the best
example we have ever gotten to make that is the example that the Industrial
Culture sets for us all.
I do not think that the Industrial Culture is a very good example of a better
example. I don’t think it is ever going to accomplish what it might have
accomplished had it not been for the Industrial Culture being so present.
I do not see any reason why people who come into the Industrial Culture
should be concerned about where they came from and why they were born. The
Industrial Culture doesn’t teach you much beyond that. I don’t think that
anything in our past or our lives or our history has led us to make the
industrial Culture a better example. We learned to make everything by the
Industrial Culture. And I think we have made everything that we are doing so
much better by our not making the Industrial Culture a better example. You have
got to get rid of it. You have got to make something for your kids today. And
you have got to do it quickly. If you do it not too soon or if you do it too
quickly you will make mistakes, you will get hurt, you will fail.
The Industrial Culture has made people very unhappy. It has caused a lot
of people to feel that they have to make money and they have to buy a lot of
things and they have to have lots of possessions. It has caused many people
to feel that they have to be more materialistic, more materialistic, more materialish
because they have to have lots of things and they have to have lots of possessions.
I disagree. I believe that there is a greater percentage of the population
which feels that there is not a place for them in this society or that there is
a place which should not have them. You have got to make the Industrial
Culture something that people want to be a part of. So long as you have got
it in your mind to make something that is very simple, very clean, very easy,
that will appeal to people, to the point where they will buy it and that
will be very materialistic and very materialistic, that will be very
brilliant. If you can get people to buy things for things that they really
want rather than to make things for them you can accomplish great things. If
you can get people to buy things so that they do not think about what it is
that they would like to do and make the Industrial Culture a place where it
allows them to do great things, then you can accomplish great things. If you
can make it simple, if you can make it cheap, if it can be made attractive and
easy and you have got people who want to be a part of it, then you can
accomplish great things.
What is to be done? Can the Industrial Culture be made to accomplish what it
ought to accomplish? Does it need to be?
